i really love the shimokitizawa area. first one is right outside small bar owned by one guy near south side exit of odakyu line. he had 2 seats inside and a small table outside with a tiny pot of oden. i met a salaryman there drunk already who shared his table with us. unfortunately, i couldn't communicate much with him though i managed to tell him my name in chinese and write the characters out. next door was another small pub with 5-6 tables crooning karaoke via a small television on the shelf above the owner.

the second photo is from another small izakaya (pub) that formerly use to serve french/japanese food before switching to the current owners. my friend gen (on the left) has become so much of a regular that he brings a bottle of red wine for them every time he visit. there is only room for one table inside that seats 7-8 people so it promotes talking with complete strangers.

there are so many of these places in japan in every neighborhood, you can never find places like this in the US.

ahhh shimokita, i love you!
we only saw this row of tiny bars that only house maybe 4 people inside
on the side of the odakyu tracks right after a few beers at a great yakitori joint...

btw, did you know there's a kami (=上=up, as opposed to shimo=下=low) kitazawa?
my friend lives off that station on keio line where we visited, but it wasn't really near shimo-kita.
i guess upper east side and lower east side in nyc aren't not really near each other either. :P

if gen starts wearing flamboyant fedoras i think he might pass as a hipster japanese artist formerly known as prince, or is it just prince nowadays?

it is what i miss most about japan. in the states you just have crazy jam packed places with hipsters everywhere. or the super divey seedy places which also have their charm.

there, it just seems full of regular working class de-stressing after a long day!
